The sciatic nerve, the largest and widest nerve in the human body, extends from the lower back through the buttock and down the lower limb. Sciatica occurs due to irritation of this nerve, often linked to the piriformis muscle beneath the glute muscle. When the piriformis muscle spasms, it can compress the sciatic nerve, causing a burning pain sensation. Prolonged or improper sitting is a common cause of this condition. Severe cases of sciatica may prevent individuals from sitting comfortably, necessitating them to keep their legs straight to alleviate irritation. If left untreated, sciatica can lead to nerve damage and potentially require surgery.
